Location: Clayton, New York
This new residence is actually an adaptive re-use in disguise. A project that had been started but not completed was left vacant, with nothing more than the shell of a building left on site. A unique opportunity arose for a contemporary home built to maximize efficiency on all fronts. The new owner chose to keep the existing shell intact but to add two additions to it, a garage with a master suite on one and the children's bedrooms on the other. We used inexpensive, low maintenance materials, such as corrugated metal siding and metal wire grating to create a contemporary industrial, yet inviting aesthetic. Super-insulated walls and a geothermal system allow the home to remain comfortable throughout the harsh winters of NNY with minimal heating cost.
