SUNY Canton Chaney Hall Dining Facility Renovation

Chaney Dining Hall is a two story 32,401 sf Laminated wood beam building which was constructed in 1966. The building was constructed into the campus hillside with a dining area view of the Grasse River. The kitchen and dining area layouts are outdated and inefficient. Most colleges have revised their food service delivery to have food courts where staff prepare meals to allow students to order from a variety of food service options. There was no accessible route through the building, and the toilet facilities were not accessible or compliant with the current New York State Fire Prevention and Building Code. Three prior phases of minor renovation have been performed at Chaney Dining Hall. Windows have been replaced, finishes have been updated, emergency power, lighting and electrical distribution have been replaced, kitchen ventilation and hot water heating have been improved, and failed boilers have been replaced.

Aubertine and Currier was selected by Kideney Architects as a key team member of this project due to it’s expertise, local presence, previous knowledge of the SUNY Canton campus, and working relationship with the college and facilities operations department. As the project progressed Aubertine and Currier was contracted by SUCF for Construction Inspection services for the $7.8 million dollar project.

Project Overview & Scope of Work

The goal of this project was to convert the dining hall from one with a service line to one that has “a la cart dining options,” upgrade the exterior cladding, improve accessibility, replace and rebuild the Heating, Ventilation and Chiller equipment, the cooling tower, control systems, energy management system and other miscellaneous equipment/systems with more easily maintained and energy efficient systems to extend or restore the equipment to optimal operation condition. Another component of the project was to replace the refrigeration infrastructure, electrical and plumbing infrastructure, install a sprinkler system, fire alarm, roof, toilets, and ADA elevator. The structural scope included a new masonry elevator shaft, new structural steel columns, beams and bar joists to extend the intermediate level into the dining room (east) with a floor system that is a metal deck and 3 ½” concrete floor. Installed were new structural steel stringers, risers and pans with concrete treads for stairs in the dining area, and additional steel (as required) to reinforce the floor system on the upper floor to provide an area to support a stone fired pizza oven. A&C also coordinated and expedited RFI’s, as well as provided field sketches and supplemental drawings, with updates to the progress and schedule. We were on the project site twice per week and coordinated an onsite job meeting held every other week.
