North Star Hatchery

Client: Morris Hatchery, Inc. | Location: Watertown, New York | Completion Date: 2008 | Services Provided: Architetural, Engineering (Civil/Site, Structural, Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing)

Aubertine and Currier performed Architectural, Structural, Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, and Civil/Site design services for this facility. Architectural and Engineering design services included design, permitting and part-time construction administration and inspection services. Bidding and Construction Management was provided by the Owner. The Agricultural/Industrial facility included a 28,000 sf hatchery building and 66,000 sf parking and loading area, on the 5.04 acre Lot #6 within the Jefferson County Industrial Park, NY. The facility was designed during the summer and fall of 2007. The Civil/Site Engineers worked closely with the owner and contractor to complete local and state regulatory approvals and break ground during the late fall of 2007. One of the Owner's primary goals was to have the Hatchery operational for the spring 2009 season. The fall ground breaking allowed the contractor to complete major earthwork activities and start foundation construction prior to the cold and wet winter weather. This also provided additional time for the building design team to finalize Architectural, Structural, Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing components of the building.

Aubertine and Currier's local presence enabled the local and state regulatory permit process to be completed in a relatively short timeframe of three months. The experienced Project Manager's and skilled technical support staff at Aubertine and Currier helped to streamline the communication and collaboration process between the local New York contractor (DC Builders), Florida owner (Morris Hatchery) and Netherlands hatchery equipment manufacturer (Pas Reform).

The 28,000 sf state of the art Hatchery design included:

  • 1,850 sf climate controlled truck dock and receiving area
  • 1,220 sf mechanical room and backup generator
  • 2,300 sf of office space
  • 20,550 sf of hatchery space (fumigation room, setter room, transfer room, hatching room, wash room, clean room & lab, and handling room)
  • 2,080 sf climate controlled fully enclosed truck dock and shipping area
  • 66,000 sf (1.51 acre) employee parking lot, truck drives, and service area
  • Municipal water service extension for domestic and fire protection
  • Municipal sewer main extension and building lateral

The project's construction cost was $2,700,000, excluding the hatching equipment. The North Star Hatchery opened in the spring of 2008 as the first of its kind single stage hatchery in the USA. Pas Reform, is a leading manufacturer of incubators, hatchery climate control, and hatchery automation systems. The hatchery is equipped with SmartSet™ 77 setters, each with a capacity of 76,800 eggs, and SmartHatch™ hatchers with capacities of 19,200 eggs each. The facility has a fully equipped hatch capacity of 500,000 chicks per day, with initial production anticipated at 100,000 chicks per day. Some of the funding agencies involved with the project include:

  • Jefferson County Job Development Corporation
  • Jefferson County Agricultural Development Agency
  • Empire State Development
