Fort Drum Dental Clinic Addition
Client: US Army Corps of Engineers | Location: Fort Drum, New York | Completion Date: 2013 | Services Provided: Civil & Structural Engineering, Land Surveying
Aubertine and Currier Architects, Engineers & Land Surveyors, PLLC performed the Structural and Civil/Site design services for the Dental Clinic Addition Project at Fort Drum. The 4,991 square-foot addition included additional dental care spaces, administrative and ancillary service space. The addition was designed to be consistent with, and complimentary to, the existing structure and best efforts to achieve a LEED silver rating. The building was designed in such a way that the addition could be constructed with very little disruption to the existing facility and its day to day operations. The addition was also designed to mirror the architectural appearance of the existing building’s rooflines and glazing layout.
The structural design for the project included shallow concrete foundations to match the elevation of the existing foundation. Floors were constructed as slabs on grade at each end and a crawl space in the center of the building making it easier to convey the required dental equipment piping and utilities below. The superstructure for the addition was pre-engineered light gauge metal roof trusses with masonry shear walls/bearing walls on the exterior. The selection of materials for the exterior walls was determined based on the actual standoff distance of the building to the controlled perimeter of the facility (which was the Fort Drum gated access). The structure was also designed to meet or exceed standard Army regulations, including the Unified Facilities Criteria (UFC) for each trade involved with the project, the applicable codes, handicapped accessibility and the minimum Department of Defense (DOD) anti-terrorism and force protection standards for new and existing buildings including Standoff Distance, Windows, Exterior Doors, Mass Notification, etc..
The Civil/Site design involved 6,440 sf of parking lot expansion designed to serve the Dental Clinic addition. There was also relocation of 3 existing light poles along two sides of the expanded parking lot. Other site improvements include sanitary sewer connection, new dumpster pad enclosure, chiller and concrete pad.
There was continued coordination between all disciplines during design. The fast track design for this project began with the Notice to Proceed, signed January of 2013. In order to keep on track with design, the project was divided into two submissions to the Government: a Site, Utilities and Foundation Submission and a Building Design Submission. This allowed for the construction of the foundations and site work to begin with approval of the first submission. The building is still under construction and is scheduled to be completed at the end of 2014. Total project cost was estimated at $3,267,000.
