North Country Library Systems
Client: North Country Library Systems | Location: Watertown, New York | Completion Date: 2011 | Services Provided: Architectural, Structural & Civil Engineering
The North Country Library System is a cooperative of public libraries in Jefferson, Lewis, Oswego, and St. Lawrence Counties in New York State that provides technical support, training, and grants to all member libraries including schools, public libraries and state prison facilities. Funding is provided through a mix of State, County, Local Government, and Private Funding and endowment sources. Through the sequencing of operations, Aubertine and Currier Architects, Engineers & Land Surveyors, PLLC was able to complete the following projects:
In 2006, the Library System received funding and budgeting for the replacement of the facility’s roof. A&C’s Architectural Department completed roof design and performed the Construction Administration services regarding the roof replacement. The design life of the current roof system had long since expired and the integrity of the roof was failing. The existing flat roof had 3.2 inches of rigid foam insulation and a rubber membrane. The entire 15,000 sf of roof and insulation was completely removed down to the metal deck and replaced with new insulation and a fully adhered, reinforced membrane roofing system with a 25 to 30 year manufacturers’ warranty.
Interior Office and Training Facility Renovations
In 2007, A&C completed a re-design of approximately 11,000 sf of interior office space at the NCLS site. The once open and airy warehouse type office space was converted into a very comfortable and welcoming business office. The new interior includes a warm reception area with decorative lighting, a large conference room, a state of the art computer training facility, office cubicles for employees, and a relaxing lounge area. The current mechanical, electrical, and HVAC systems were also given a complete renovation to add efficiency to the systems as well as cost savings to the Owner. A large part of the interior renovation was making the interior and exterior space more accessible and functional to those with disabilities as well as the employees.
In 2008, funding and budgeting was received to complete site improvements to the NCLS office site. Once again A&C was contracted to provide Surveying and Civil Engineering services for the design of exterior site improvements. This portion of the project included construction of parking and a drop-off area, granite curbing, reconstruction of entry drive asphalt, and miscellaneous asphalt walkway reconstruction and grading. Portions of the existing parking lot were widened and given an asphalt overlay, while other parking lots had to be completely reconstructed. Excellent construction pricing was received which allowed for the redesign and expansion of an additional parking lot and storm sewer reconstruction. This site improvement will allow for adequate parking, even for its largest training events.
