The Cape Vincent Improvement League was one of the recipients of a New York State Main Street Grant. The New York State Main Street Grant offers financial resources and technical assistance to help strengthen the economic vitality of New York States “Main Streets”. Locally, the program was referred to as the Cape Vincent Main Street Revitalization Program. Improvements that were made possible through this grant included façade and building renovations, and an update to the streetscape.
The Chavoustie family of Cape Vincent, who owns and operates Aubrey’s Shopping Center, which includes a grocery store and gift shop, were one of the commercial property owners that participated in this program. The façade redesign delivers low maintenance exterior historic detailing that matches the existing historic charm of downtown Cape Vincent. Design features included new storefront windows, exterior detailing, and parapet design. With renovations complete, Aubrey’s will operate under the new name of French Towne Market, paying tribute to the heritage of the Cape Vincent area. Future plans for the building include interior renovations of the store, and apartment units to be constructed on the existing second floor. This project hopes to have a long lasting positive impact to the community of Cape Vincent, and will hopefully inspire continued transformation among main street businesses.
New York Main Street provides financial resources and technical assistance to communities to strengthen the economic vitality of the State's traditional Main Streets and neighborhoods.
