Wilcox Multi-Purpose Digital Training Range

Fort Knox, Kentucy: Performed topographic surveying, construction layout, 3D machine control terrain model design, as-built survey and site grading redesign of an 1,800 acre $31,500,000 Multi-Purpose Digital Training Range (MPDTR) at Fort Knox, KY to be used for training soldiers utilizing M1A2 main battle tank, Bradley Fighting Vehicle, light armored vehicles, helicopter crew qualification gunnery, and dismounted ground troops. Managed and coordinated all surveying aspects of the project including the topographic verification survey, layout of several miles of tank trail roads and service roads, 12 defensive firing positions, target emplacements with earth berms and timber retaining walls, track systems with target storage areas for 6 moving armor target systems to be furnished and installed by others, sitting for 57 precast concrete stationary armor targets (2 double emplacements), 149 precast concrete stationary infantry targets, and 7 moving infantry target systems, design and quantity verifications of a rock cut to be utilized for the crushing of stone to use on the tank trails, and grading redesign as a part of an value engineering package of various targets to minimize cuts in environmentally sensitive areas. This redesign required extensive line of sight analysis to ensure that all effected targets were still all visible from all firing designated positions. The majority of the new features were built using 3D terrain models and machine control guidance on the construction equipment.
