Fort Drum Utility Infrastructure Upgrades

Client: Department of the Army | Location: Fort Drum, New York | Completion Date: 2015 | Services Provided: Land Surveying

Aubertine and Currier completed a topographic and utility survey, survey layout, and As-Built survey mapping of utility upgrades. The project consisted of approximately 14,500 feet of communication line, 13,000 feet of domestic water line, 24,500 feet of natural gas line, and 8,000 feet of sanitary sewer line.

The topographic and utility survey included locating all features within the survey/construction limits including but not limited to the roadways, curbing, sidewalks, existing overhead and underground utilities, isolated trees, and any nearby buildings. Over 60 acres was surveyed encompassing 60,000’ of existing and proposed utility routes. The utility survey required the location of utility stub-ups, paint markings, pin flags and pothole locations for every underground utility within the 60,000’ survey/construction limits.   Prior to the location, an independent contractor traced, painted and flagged utilities then excavated to verify location and depth of utilities. Each verified utility location was marked the top of the utility with a PVC pipe, and backfilled the excavated area leaving the PVC pipe exposed. A&C located the PVC pipe marker horizontal and vertical location of the now verified utility. Approximately 360 stub-ups were located for the project.

The layout survey required the stakeout of the centerline of the proposed utility and the survey/construction limits, typically being a 30 to 50 foot wide strip. Services included filed as-built survey verification and mapping of all 60,000’ of constructed utilities.

The project required detailed coordination with A&C’s client, Vetco Contracting Services, LLC as it consisted of over 15 separate but interconnected areas of the 4 different utility upgrades.

A&C prepared topographic and utility survey mapping for design, including 1 foot contours, along with all improvements. All mapping was projected horizontally to New York State Plane coordinates based on the North American Datum of 1983 (NAD83/96) and vertically to the North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD88). All mapping was provided to the client in Microstation for design use along with hardcopies of the survey map. Field survey and mapping was performed under the direction of a New York State Licensed Professional Land Surveyor in accordance with The Code of Practice of The New York State Association of Professional Land Surveyors.
